Emergency responders prepare for severe weather

ELLISVILLE, MO (KTVI)– Local emergency management operations brought in additional staff in anticipation of the severe weather Thursday.  Metro West Fire Protection District in Ellisville activated its emergency operations center in the basement of a fire house.  Central County Emergency 9-1-1 Dispatch switched to an ‘incident command’  protocol to be prepared to handle multiple emergency calls in a short period of time.

Both agencies want to be proactive.  Lessons learned from the tornado in Joplin and several recent ones in the St. Louis area including the tornado that struck Lambert Airport have helped managers change procedures and increase efficiency.

Flash flooding covers parts of viewing area

JEFFERSON COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – Flash flooding throughout the day on Thursday caused inconveniences for many Jefferson County residents, but luckily, no major damage.

According to Jefferson County Director of Emergency Management Warren Robinson, after Thursday night’s round of storms, one tree fell onto a roadway, and several roads remained closed due to earlier flooding.

In terms of that earlier flooding, just off Highway M in Barnhart, a bridge leading to several homes on Chasteen Lane was partially washed away by floodwater.  Now, residents can only walk across the bridge, until it’s fixed.

Just east of that damage, flooding on Dry Creek Road sent bicycles, a lawn mower, and other outdoor toys floating down the road.  FOX 2 caught up with a family trying to salvage all of that, after the floodwater receded.

National Weather Service: “Clearly a tornado” hit University City Thursday

U. CITY – (KTVI) – Storm damage, power outages and a gas leak are the result of a severe storm and a tornado early Thursday morning.  The National Weather Services says the storm did produce a tornado, leaving large amounts of damage and downed trees in its path.

The storm rolled across St. Louis around 5 a.m.  Residents in University City reported hearing sirens and what sounded like a freight train just before trees started to fall.

There were numerous trees down on McKnight road including one that fell onto a house and another that caused a gas main break. Residents in the area had to be evacuated.

University City has set up a Disaster Hotline  for tornado victims. Anyone who needs help and is not experiencing an emergency should call 314-505-8540.  This number should be used by property owners and residents to report tornado  or other natural related damage.
